Red reunion

What could be more restful than, after 40 years, to reunite with one's elementary classmates? We are organizing so that we can capture as much of the fun and innocence of that bygone period. We just might recapture some of the fun but am not too sure about the innocence!

Independence Day Tour 2010

Historically, the first and only anniversary celebration with Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo of the proclamation of Philippine Independence was held in 1899 in a beautiful mansion in the center of Angeles City. Today the Pamintuan mansion still stands, an awesome monument to our struggle for a national identity, thanks to the Bangko Sentral which has preserved this heritage structure. Every year, whether or not the sitting president proclaims it a national holiday, the City of Angeles and the Kuliat Foundation mount a fitting celebration on June 12, where everyone comes in Filipiniana attire, and participates in the reenactment of that historical event, complete with actors in period costumes, marching brass bands, choirs, and other performers.

Too hot to handle!

We would have been on the road to the second best-preserved heritage town in the country this Sunday, May 23, except for one thing: it's freakin' hot outside and guests are rethinking their travel and leisure plans. Well, I guess, we will have to cool off a bit and shelve that for another more propitious day. ;(

That Visita Iglesia

Rise and shine! We left Manila bathed in glorious sunshine on the road to what promised to be a memorable day of rest and renewal of our faith. There were 25 tour paticipants, some with their photo gear, others content to tag along, every single one ready to capture images that awakened us to the reality of faith in ourselves and in others.

Because I made a check drive through the suggested itinerary a week before, I was able to make changes from this

This meant we were going to drop Calamba and St Mark's chapel in Makiling's National High School for the Arts, add new destinations like Sariaya, Tayabas and Kamay ni Hesus, and gain distance and time since we would end closer to Manila instead of farther!

But as it turned out, man proposes and God disposes.

Traffic was horrendous. Everyone seemed to be going to the same direction. What should have been a 2.5 hour drive to our first destination in Sariaya took us 6 hours! To top it all, our bus had irreparable trouble in Kamay ni Hesus and we had to wait for a replacement bus from Manila. By the time it arrived at 10 pm we were still 3 churches short of our plan and had only 2 hours to complete the seven churches before they close at 12 midnight. Thankfully, we were rather full, thanks to the meals at Patio Rizal courtesy of the bus company (hurray!). Given the late hour we could no longer visit Liliw, Nagcarlan and San Pablo. Instead we were gifted with other remarkable churches in Pagsanjan, dedicated to our Lady of Guadalupe, in the beautiful heritage town of Pila and in the old town of Bay from where the Laguna de Bay derives its name. We left the eerie church, covered by cloud formations half revealing a full moon, at the stroke of midnight. Nothing could have been more memorable to our group.

Visit Iglesia 2010: Laguna & Quezon

Holy Week in the Philippines is a rubricated time. But if you haven't made plans yet, consider a slight deviation from the usual: go out and observe the traditional Visita Iglesia and visit seven lovely stone churches in mystical Laguna and Quezon provinces on Holy Thursday, April 1.

Laguna de Bay is Southeast Asia’s largest fresh water lake fed throughout the year by regular rain showers. It empties itself to the Manila Bay through the historic Pasig River. Traditionally, the lakeshore towns of Laguna and Rizal as well as the province of Quezon have provided the food and material requirements of the capital city of Manila, with the River Pasig serving as the highway of commerce and culture. Thus, the people in this area are known as “taga-ilog” or riverfolk, now accepted as Tagalog. There is much to rediscover in the region and in the small towns that have inevitably left lasting imprints in our sense of national identity. Their churches, many of them tinged with the patina of centuries, built and rebuilt and then built up again, are monuments to our undying faith and resiliency as a people.

Our tour itinerary will take us to seven churches where we will pray the Stations of the Cross:

1. St. John the Baptist Church, Calamba City, where Rizal was baptized, with a side trip to the National Arts Center in Mt. Makiling
2. the Diocesan Shrine of St. Anthony de Padua in Pila
3. St. Paul the Hermit Church, San Pablo City, with buffet lunch of local delicacies
4. St. Bartholomew Parish church, Nagcarlan, with a side visit to their famous underground cemetery
5. St. John the Baptist church, Liliw, with time to shop for slippers!
6. St. Gregory the Great Parish church, Majayjay;
7. San Isidro Labrador church, Lucban, Quezon, with a stop at Kamay ni Hesus shrine astride Mt. Banahaw

Between the two fabled mountain fastnesses of Makiling and Banahaw, it is hoped that tour participants will find communion with God, or at the very least, a greater appreciation of themselves as believing Filipinos.

Hot Air Balloon Festival and Heritage Tour of Angeles, Pampanga

The annual Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta (PIHABF) is the country's biggest aviation sports event today. Hot air balloon and airplane pilots from all over the world fly into the Philippines to join their local counterparts in this breathtaking event. The balloon pilots pit their skills in aerial competitions such as hesitation waltz, hare and hounds, key grab race, and spectacles such as balloon sky diving, mass ascensions and night glow.

In addition to daily flights of the hot air balloons, other activities include: skydiving, daily flag jumps (a skydiver jumps with the Philippine flag while the National Anthem is played to the start of the day's activities); micro light demonstrations; small planes fly-bys and fly-ins; remote controlled airplanes exhibitions; aerobatics; light airplane balloon bursting competition; ultra-light formation flying and bomb dropping exhibitions; helicopter fly-ins and exhibitions; an air rally; rocketry demonstrations; kite flying exhibitions; and races between ultra lights and motorcycles

The Hot Air Balloon Festival commenced in 1994 when then Tourism Secretary Mina Gabor commissioned Korean businessman and hot-air balloon pilot, Mr. Sung Kee Paik, and British Airways General Manager, Mr. John Emery, to consider the staging of a balloon fiesta in the country similar to the ones mounted in countries like Japan, United States and Europe.

The tandem together with Sec. Gabor then met up with Regional Director Ronaldo Tiotuico to explore the potential of the project. After scouring the length and breadth of the region, the group decided to lay their stakes on the former US Air Force facility, Clark Special Economic Zone in Pampanga for the holding of the ballooning event. And so the first hot-air balloon fiesta was held in the same year with some 21 balloon pilots from 10 countries participating plus a lone entry from the Philippines with the Department of Tourism (DoT) , the Hot Air Balloon Club and British Airways as organizers.

The ultralight planes became part of the event. In 1995, participation grew to 27 balloons including a basketless one-man balloon and two entries from the Philippines. In 1996, the DoT requested Capt. Joy Roa of Air Ads, Inc. who is himself a licensed balloon pilot, to take over the responsibilities of organizing the fiesta.

The event was enlarged to include other aero-sport activities such as sky diving, aerobatic stunts and precision maneuvers courtesy of the Blue Diamonds and later the Red Aces of the Philippine Air Force, paragliding, motorized hang-gliding, remote controlled model aircraft (aeromodellers) and kite flying.

A Power Session

Today was a like a lightbulb moment become reality. So surreal. Uncanny even. In a room near Ateneo de Manila, I shared a chi-gong session with a kababayan who is an anesthesiologist and an old-time friend from the PR industry and we went through some basic moves in chi-gong seated all the while on the edge of some plastic stools. Our session guide has been into meditation for years and and now runs Green Lightworks Co, providing integrated stress management programs, SATTVAH Wellness Group and its mediation and healing center. We had great synchronicity. And the rest is yet to unfold.

I am immediately encouraged to start a new blog about restful renewal, as the new channel of my life passions.
